Maple Days

Friday – Sunday, through March 17, 2024, 9:30 am to 4:00 pm

For many at Old Sturbridge Village, the first whiff of spring isn’t the aroma of spring flowers – it’s the smell of wood smoke and maple syrup, a sure sign that the sap is rising and spring is on the way.  Join us for “Maple Days” on select dates in February and March, when the Village’s working sugar camp demonstrates maple sugaring as it was done in early 19th-century New England.

See the entire sugar-making process, from tapping the trees to “sugaring off,” and learn why maple sugar was more commonly used than maple syrup in early New England. Costumed historians will also cook period foods made with maple products and the tinner and cooper will make maple-related items.

2021 Historical Craft Classes: https://www.osv.org/event/historical-craft-classes/

Spend some time at the Village learning a historical craft. These adult workshops vary from blacksmithing to textiles, coopering, foodways, and more. Come and try your hand at a craft and take home your finished masterpiece! Unless otherwise specified, workshops will be held in the Country Bank Museum Education Center. Historical Craft Classes are for adults, ages 18 and up, unless otherwise noted.

All class registrations CLOSE 1 week prior to the event. Register online below, or call 508-347-0290 if you have questions.

The New Cabinetmaking Shop

Sturbridge and the surrounding region were home to some of the foremost rural cabinetmakers of the early 19th century, including Nathan Lumbard and Oliver Wight. These craftspeople, as well as others like them, were integral to 19th-century rural New England communities. In 2017, Village staff and Trustees began working on a plan to create a permanent home for cabinetmaking at the Village. The opening of the new shop on is the culmination of countless hours of work and a highlight of Old Sturbridge Village’s 75th-anniversary celebrations.

Field of Flags

Each year, we build a Field of Flags to support and honor the U.S. military and their families. Your generous gift to the Field of Flags campaign helps provide a recreational and educational experience for military service members and their families free of charge.

Your generous gift to the Field of Flags campaign provides you with an opportunity to honor a loved one who is currently serving or has served in the U.S. Military. The names of the individuals remembered with gifts to the Field of Flags campaign are posted on the digital Honor Board on our website and on physical Honor Boards outside the Visitor Center.

In addition to planting a flag, you also have the opportunity to hang a red, white, or blue star bearing your loved one’s name from our covered bridge in November as part of Veterans and Military Families Month. It is our privilege to join you in saying “thank you” to these brave men and women for their service.

New 3D Tours!

If you can’t visit Old Sturbridge Village in person, explore several of the Village’s buildings in this new 3D tour! Even if you have visited OSV many times before, this tour will allow virtual visitors to get up close to artifacts that are usually tucked behind barriers. Catalog the items in the Asa Knight Store, examine the pottery on the shelves in the pottery shop, and see what new discoveries you can make in the Freeman Farmhouse!

Throughout the tour, pins will allow you to look closer or learn new information. There are also new videos with some of the Village’s knowledgeable costumed historians to bring life to the spaces.

Welcome to Old Sturbridge Village – an outdoor living history museum depicting life in an early 19th-century rural New England village, featuring costumed historians, artisans and farmers; historic homes, trade shops and water-powered mills; a working farm with heritage breed animals; and permanent and rotating exhibits.

We recommend allowing at least three hours to tour the Village, though many stay for the day.
